The Poetics of Sight

A Collaboration with the University of Stuttgart

This tour takes you on an auditory journey through our collection. Students from the University of Stuttgart have written multilingual literary texts that vividly describe works by renowned artists, from the early modern period to the 19th century. In this tour, you can rediscover paintings by artists, such as Rembrandt, Johann Heinrich Füssli, Edward Burne-Jones, and Caspar David Friedrich.

In the seminar “The Blind Witness: Poetry and Painting” from Dr. Jessica Bundschuh of the Department of English Literatures and Cultures, the enrolled students explored how they could improve access to art for people who are blind or have low vision. To this end, Katharina Rohne, Head of Digital Mediation at the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart, and Dr. Jessica Bundschuh worked with the students to develop an audio tour that appeals to all the senses and, thereby, expands the audience of visual art through literary description.

Prof. Dr. Christiane Lange (Director of Staatsgalerie Stuttgart), Dr. Jessica Bundschuh, Katharina Rohne, and the student assistant Sui Lung will tell you more about this project during a brief introduction at stop 101 of the tour.

You can access this Staatsgalerie collection tour on your smartphone while at the museum, at home, or even on the go. For an undisturbed listening experience, we recommend using your own headphones during the audio tour.

This exciting tour is perfect for anyone who loves art and language, especially in combination; we wish you ‘happy listening’!
