11 Katharina Grosse
Untitled

11 / 11

This brightly painted bronze sculpture was made in 2019. The artist used a spray technique to apply a lively mix of colours, including yellow, green, red, blue, purple and black. The way these colours mix and match on the surface is always changing. Sometimes one colour blends gently into the next, while at other points, they clash violently.

The surface of the bronze is covered in cracks. It has sharp edges, folds and fractures, which create an interesting effect of light and shadow. The paint is applied to make the structure stand out, which gives the model a dynamic energy. The bronze appears almost to be moving outwards, expanding further into space in all directions.

Compare the powerfully expansive, layered form of this piece with the other works in this room. Two pieces from 2017 use similar colours and materials, but are shaped differently. They are flatter and more compact, and seem to unfold differently, focused more towards a specific direction.

Another piece, from 2021, is different in some ways yet again. The visual language is denser and more introverted. The surfaces are closely packed, with smooth transitions between the different parts. The bronze model from 2019 has a strong contrast between bright and dark tones, but the contrasts in the piece from 2021 are more subtle.

All of the artworks in this room were made over four years. But even in just four years, we can see the artist's work changing a lot as she moves from open, experimental shapes, through a lively, expansive phase, to a more focused and concentrated style.

This brings us to the end of the exhibition. We hope you have enjoyed this journey through Katharina Grosse's artistic universe. You may even have seen painting in a new light.

We hope to see you again soon in the Kunstgebäude or Staatsgalerie Stuttgart. For now, all that remains is for us to thank you for taking the time to visit the exhibition with us.
