The sculpture in front is called »Ghost«. It makes visitors want to stop and look at it. It is so big that it blocks the entrance to the Dome Room. This »Ghost« is a barrier that visitors must find a way around. The artist, Katharina Grosse, has placed it here on purpose to make us think about how we move around in space.
At the same time, »Ghost« is like a doorway to the other artworks on display. When you look at all of Katharina Grosse's art, you can see that »Ghost« connects two periods of the artist's work. You can see her early, experimental sculptures and the large paintings that she is known for now.
The form of »Ghost« is like geological fragments. But by using polystyrene, a material that is light, bendy and not very long-lasting, the artist has created a sculpture that is both solid and short-lived.
What you notice most is something that isn't there. We look and look, but we can't find the bright colours that we know from Grosse's other works. She has decided not to paint »Ghost«, which makes it very different to »The Sprayed Dear« in the next room. This creates a connection between the two works, between the complete lack and the strong presence of colour. It almost feels like the artist wants us to take on a more active role, like we have to imagine a colour in our mind's eye. So, you could also say that »Ghost« is like a hidden painting, where the lack of colour makes the figure seem full of energy.
