Welcome to the exhibition »Katharina Grosse. The Sprayed Dear« at the Kunstgebäude on Schlossplatz. This exhibition is the first to show the artist’s 3D work. It is also Baden-Württemberg's official State Exhibition for 2025.
Katharina Grosse's work makes us think differently about painting. She breaks the rules of painting by using different materials and spaces. Colour is not limited to the edges of surfaces, but becomes a part of how we see space.
Katharina Grosse was born in Freiburg im Breisgau in 1961. She studied painting in Munster and Düsseldorf, and later taught at some of the best art schools. In 2014, she was awarded the Oskar Schlemmer Prize of the State of Baden-Württemberg. Today, she is recognised as one of the most important figures in contemporary art.
For this exhibition, she has created a new work called "The Sprayed Dear," which is designed to fill the Kunstgebäude's 26-metre high Dome Room. The title of the work plays on the English words "deer", meaning the animal, and "dear", meaning beloved or precious. It is also a tribute to the famous golden stag that can be seen at the top of the dome, a well-known landmark in Stuttgart. Visitors are encouraged to think about the relationship between painting and space.
You can also see Katharina Grosse's work in a new way. It is the first exhibition to look at her whole artistic development, from her early experiments with materials to her huge, immersive installations. You can see how her style has changed over time, and how she thinks about painting now.
Your visit begins in the Marble Hall with a piece from the artist's childhood, which gives us a glimpse into her later work.
