Katharina Grosse. The Sprayed Dear

The painter Katharina Grosse, born in Freiburg im Breisgau in 1961, is known for her unique, expansive paintings. This exhibition offers the first comprehensive overview of her previously unknown plastic and sculptural work, shedding light on the internationally renowned artist's beginnings - from the 1980s to the present day.

Grosse transcends the boundaries of two-dimensionality and paints not only traditional canvases, but also entire rooms, façades and landscapes. Her experimental approach creates haunting experiences. The highlight of the exhibition is a site-specific installation created especially for the domed hall of the Kunstgebäude, which allows everyone to experience Grosse's art through their senses.

For almost three decades, Grosse has used the spray technique to paint her luminous, vibrant images across canvases, interior and exterior spaces and various objects such as stones, wood and furniture. Sculptural forms made of aluminium, bronze and polystyrene are transformed into lively, dynamic compositions through the integration of colours and natural materials such as wood.

The exhibition at the Kunstgebäude am Schlossplatz shows the inexhaustible range of painting on various materials, with which Katharina Grosse expands the medium and thus questions the traditional boundaries of painting.
